Arola, Sheppard, and Ball point out that genre can shape how authors make their point. In other words, genre shapes content. Locate one print text that tries to bring about some change and briefly discuss how the genre conventions of that print text has shaped the text's content.
I chose this music festival flyer as an example of how genre shapes content. The festival flyer is a short, one-page text that typically conveys who (bands), what (the festival name), where (the physical location) and when. The genre of the festival flyer does not contain biographies of the performing bands due to spatial constraints. Listing over thirty acts takes up a lot of space. The multitude of acts makes the festival flyer genre different from say the FSU Club Downunder flyer, which hosts the same amount of acts in one semester that Bled Fest hosts in one day.
ReplyDeleteThis flyer also shows that the festival flyer genre places the most well known bands at the top of the list. Bled Fest is a festival focused on new wave punk, pop-punk, and hardcore music. The top acts at Bled Fest would be near the bottom in a larger, more varied festival like Bonnaroo. Festival posters content is dictated by the genre’s tendency to place the most popular groups towards the top of the list. This is because putting a name first that most people recognize hooks the viewer in. A reversed order, the least known bands at the top, means that a reader would probably look at the flyer, see no bands they recognize in the first few lines, and not bother to read the rest. Genre dictates how we typically interact with texts and so genre also plays a huge role in making sure content is in a recognizable, effective form.

ReplyDeleteThe change that this print text is trying to bring about is to earn money for a fashion magazine on campus called Clutch. I would say, this type of genre is a fundraiser and the genre conventions that are brought along with this type of print text is the information, color and text size. All of these things work together in order to grab the attention of anyone who comes across this flyer. Therefore, the genre conventions have shaped the context of this print text for it to be captivating and eye-catching. To elaborate, this flyer has chosen to type out only the most important information for the audience to read. The largest font tells the reader what the fundraiser is, whom it is for and then the prize for the winner. If the reader is then interested in finding out more they can read on to the smaller print in the middle of the flyer. The information itself and the size of the information works hand in hand, keeping in mind that details of what is going to grab the attention of any passer-by. Color is an important thing to consider and is something that we gravitate to because it is something that is able to evoke feelings and or emotions. The most obvious color in this flyer is the red background of tickets that pop out at you. However, it was smart for the designing to contrast the red with a white background so it would be easier to read the information more easily as opposed to struggling to read it against the ticket background. It is also important to pick a set of colors on a flyer that are not contrasting or hard to look at for the eye. The black, white and red are a safe combination as to not veer away any reader from looking at it.

ReplyDeleteIt’s very typical for films to use the genre of promotional posters to encourage people to go to the theaters. Its purpose is either to affirm those who were intending to see the film anyway or to change the mind of people who were not planning to see it. In the case for this James Bond film, the poster stepped it up a notch by adding many positive reviews to add credibility. Movie posters are usually large and have plenty of space for text if the creator wanted. Most film posters relies on the visual mode and are often supported by linguistic modes. This is most likely due to the fact that film itself is a visual genre and keeping a consistency with promotional materials is appropriate. The genre shapes the content by liming what type of text is put on the poster. With a film series as popular as James Bond, there isn’t any need to actually find some way to explain the plot. Instead the larger text is reserved mostly for reviews (including the five star system of reviewing), the title of this specific Bond film and also the words “at cinemas everywhere.” It gives the viewer bare minimum yet essential information, the film title, that it’s currently available and how wonderful of a movie critics believe it to be.
Genre is a powerful tool in which authors shape the content of the message they are trying to get across to their readers. A print text that tried, and more intensive purposes succeeded, in brining about change is the Declaration of Independence. The “Founding Fathers” of the United States of America’, as we know it today, signed this documented statement on July 4th, 1776, as a day of independence moreover meaning that the thirteen original colonies were now independent states from the British empire. The genre of this statement can really be defined as patriotism and heroism as these men were brought together by the scorn they felt from their British oppressors and drafted this text together to unite everyone in the colonies behind a purpose bigger than themselves. The conventions of patriotism and heroism stem from believing in someone or something that is a representative whole of wanting to make a difference for the greater good. Despite going into war, with the possibility of the British winning, people supported the endeavors of these Founding Fathers for the common belief in creating a free land for all. This text’s content has moreover shaped the society we live in today in more than just a national holiday celebrated annually but as the mindset that Americans have as well as immigrants to this country. This text’s content has in my opinion provided a genre for this Country in the belief of American as the greatest nation and that once we put our mind together we can accomplish anything.

I take your point; the Declaration of Independence has had myriad and important effects. A question: I'm not sure what you mean where you write: "This text’s content has in my opinion provided a genre for this Country in the belief of American as the greatest nation and that once we put our mind together we can accomplish anything." How does genre factor into a country's beliefs exactly?
DeleteI'd encourage you to think about the text you've identified in terms of its rhetorical situation. On one hand, it's a public declaration not unlike something like this: https://chicagofamilyhistory.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/alexander-urban-declaration-of-intent-top-half.jpg
On another hand, it's not unlike a philosophy of values: https://enterprisingfashion.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/applemarketingphilosophy.jpg
On a third hand, it's also a list of grievances: http://memory.loc.gov/rbc/rbpe/rbpe01/rbpe018/01805500/001dr.jpg
My print text example is an article in a magazine. This article persuades readers to workout with a partner by providing exercise examples. The article consists of two pages long with bolded titles, nine images and short captions. The pictures show two women demonstrating the exercise examples. The photo titles are black, bold and relate to the exercised performed in the photos they caption. For example, two women are lying on their backs with their toes touching in the air, forming a heart shape with their bodies. The caption title is “I Heart You.” The captions under these titles detail how to perform the partner exercises.
ReplyDeleteThe images, captions and size of the article are all conventions that relate to the article’s purpose, which is to motivate the reader to workout with someone else. The spatial modes make the article visually appealing, and it is a two-page article so there are a variety of exercise examples/photos. Additionally, the location of the article in the magazine has shaped its content. This fitness article is located in the “Hot&Healthy” section of a women’s magazine. The creator took into account the context and situation in which a reader would see the article. Since it’s a women’s magazine, the article’s conventions appeal to a woman, and since it’s in the workout section, the article appeals to women interested in health and fitness. Therefore, the situation, context and conventions shaped the article’s content in order to accomplish its goal- persuading women to workout with a buddy.

ReplyDeleteI utilized The School of Theatre at Florida State’s flyer for their new play Ragtime as a print text in which the genre is shaping the content. The print text is using the genre of a persuasive and informative flyer in order to get people to attend their show. This is exemplified though genre conventions such as the information on the flyer, the images, colors, and text size. All these elements work in conjunction to intrigue the audience and influence them into viewing the production. Immediately the audience is presented with the basic information they would need to attend the play. The who in this case is Opening Nights Performing Arts and The School of Theatre at Florida State, the what is the play Ragtime, the when is February 13 to March 1, and the where is the Fallon Theatre.
This information is presented along with the image of the Statue of Liberty to show how the play is set in New York City. There is a strong theme of cultures coming together as the premise is based on an African- American family, suburban family and a Jewish immigrant family uniting in unlikely situations. The statue of liberty is the entire background of this picture to show American pride though its bright blue colors and fireworks shooting across the page. Furthermore, the word "Ragtime" is presented in red and white stripes just like the American flag to further the image of the New York City melting pot. The entire image continues to honor this red, white, and blue patriotic theme by placing all its text in white, while being surrounded by red and blue images.
The text size ranges depending on how important the information is to get across. The date and location of the play are the biggest on the flyer, most likely capturing the audience’s attention first on the top left corner of the page and written in all capitalized letters. The name of the play and producer follow, presented below the date and location and with a much smaller text size. Under the producer and title are the acknowledgements to the producers of the play, music and lyrics as well as acknowledging the author of Ragtime. Because this information isn’t essential in persuading the audience to see the play, it is written in the smallest text at the corner of the flyer. Thus, these genre conventions are all working in unison to successfully persuade people to attend the production of Ragtime.

ReplyDeleteI chose a flyer that persuades people to participate in the Light the Night Walk. The flyer features actress Miranda Cosgrove on it along with a quote. The main focus is the words “I walk because someone’s life depends on it.” This is in the center of the flyer in big, bold font. The bottom of the flyer announces the details of the event. It also includes the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society logo.
The genre conventions of the print text shaped the content because it is a charity event flyer. Since it is trying to persuade people to donate, the flyer includes the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk. It also includes a quote from Cosgrove stating she walks to celebrate her grandmother, a cancer survivor. These are emotional appeals to persuade viewers of the flyer. This charity is also using a well known actress to spread awareness of the event. A flyer usually includes event details such as the what, when and where which are located on the bottom. It also provides the charity’s logo and a link for more information. Overall, this print text fit the genre of a charity event flyer.
http://theinspirationroom.com/daily/print/2009/12/wwf_stop_climate_change.jpg
ReplyDeleteThis print ad is trying to get the public to be aware of climate change. It is brought to us by WWF, which the logo itself is a panda, an endangered species, that invokes a call to action. It uses the term “climate change” to its advantage instead of “global warming”. Because the terminology is more readily accepted since it is more appropriate to the changing climate, it appeals to a wider audience, even those who don’t believe in “global warming”. Beside the very powerful words of “Stop the climate change before it changes you.” is an image. This image by itself is surreal in its mixture of human and fish. It makes complete sense when paired with the words though. It shows a change that is grotesque. The grotesque image of a human and fish combination is startling and is effective in its ability to make the audience think. Evolution teaches us that organisms change according to our environment and if the audience is faced with an image of that change it is more likely that they will be moved to act. Because the ad also includes a link to a website a person would feel compelled to visit this site and there they should be able to find out how they can help. Once people are given information on what they can do they are more likely to actually act. So the text and image of this print work really well together to get its point across.
The text that I have selected is an event poster advertising the BAFTA Film Awards night. It seeks to change the viewer’s behavior – to convince them to tune into the awards show they are hosting. The core elements of this genre include the giving of primary information (answering the where, when, and what questions of the event) through text, and tying this in with either a geometric, unifying design or the use of a central image to convey what the event is about. It also often makes use of a title, or “grab element”, which lures an audience in with a simple statement. Here that element would be the phrase “The Big Reveal” which acts to draw on the viewer’s curiosity. This is reinforced by the central image, a genre convention, which again stimulates interest and curiosity that will assumedly be sated by viewing the awards show.
ReplyDeleteThe design choices that have been made in this poster (deciding how much text to present, where and how to present it, etc.) are all shaped by the conventions of the genre it exists in. For example, under the large catch phrase “The Big Reveal” we are presented with the date and time of the event as well as the channels that the show will be aired on. The placement of this information -- information placed under a title -- is standard to the genre.

https://timesbytwelve.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/black-swan-poster31.jpg
ReplyDeleteFor my print text example that breaks the mold, I chose this particular movie poster for Black Swan. This falls into, of course, the movie poster and advertising category. More specifically, the film itself is within both the psychological horror genre and thriller genre.
At first glance, the poster is quite unusual for choosing not to feature visuals of its actors or any scenes from the movie. It is instead a seemingly aged piece of artwork that only vaguely depicts what the movie is to be about. It features the title of the movie as well as a few actors names, only because it must. The conventional movie poster formal stops there.
This designer chose to eliminate reviews, ratings, and quotes from the movie poster, along with the other things they decided against that I mentioned above. Usually, people are intrigued by good ratings and reviews and are essentially peer pressured into seeing the movie. I think that, in this case, the vagueness of the movie poster is what is intriguing about it. One might write the movie off, only to find themselves wondering about it later. It is also unconventional in the way it displays the movies genre - or, the way is does not. The artwork is simple and graceful. The text is in a very basic font, and the art shows both a swan and the silhouette of a ballerina. One would expect the movie poster for a psychological horror/thriller movie to be mysterious, scary, or maybe even gruesome. However, this movie poster does not make me uncomfortable at all, and I would not have thought to place the movie into one of those genres. This poster gets the job done, and is conventional as well as unconventional at the same time.

ReplyDeleteGenre is a distinct tool used by an author/artist/etc. to shape the content of the printed material. Genre is a way to allocate audiences and bring them into the situation of the content of the message. The print text that I found I found was advertised by Norlis Bookstore. This ad was trying to convince more people to disconnect with the internet, social media, or more literally Facebook. In doing so they should instead pick up books, and became more interactive outside of our electronic culture. I think more specifically they are campaigning for the traditional books, in hand with going to actual bookstores, over other forms like e-books.
For me this ad uniquely uses genre conventions like font on the books and the images to correlate their central message. The title of the first book “face” has cover of the outline of a man’s face without the actual features showing, it’s just this white blank space. Whether intentional or not, this goes hand in hand with the ambiguous nature of social media. Also, the author of the ad was making a serious claim against the strung out users of social media and the jarring eyes on the cover of “addict” reinforced this idea. It was also the only book that was different in color. The addict book was black while the other two were white so it automatically focused our eye to that particular phrase and that accompanied image. in addition, the books were spatially distributed on a wooden table that could be used to promote readers to go to, shop, and spend more time in actual bookstores as well, not just in the home. In short the fact that a book promotion ad used book titles as their means of print was and ingenious was of utilizing context and genre to reinforcing their claim

ReplyDeleteThe print text that I chose for my example is a film poster for the movie Whiplash. I would consider this to be in a genre with promotional texts and advertisements due to the nature of the entertainment industry. I chose this particular poster because I thought the design was interesting. Instead of eye catching images and film stars the poster consist mainly of reviews and critic praise. Not much can be know about this film from the poster without reading the critic reviews. The only thing that stands out on the poster other than the reviews is the person playing the drum set.
I think this text tries to bring about a change in the way people decide to go see movies. With the poster I chose, it tells people how good the film is without giving it a very flashy appeal. I do think this text is conventional because of the specific reviews on the poster. If you look closely it has won awards at Sundance and has multiple good reviews by well known papers and critics. The main use of this poster is to convince the viewer through impressive text that the film is very good and many in the entertainment industry think so as well. This persuasion can be tempting to a wide variety of people and people who like entertainment and movies.

This is the promotional flyer used for the upcoming music festival, Shaky Knees. I chose this for a few reasons: I love music, I'm from Atlanta (where it will be), and I will be attending. Anyways, moving on. This flyer follows a similar format of other music festivals. I've included the links to two other major music festivals underneath Shaky Knees for you to compare (excuse the tremendous link for Bonnaroo). The formula for music festival flyers is pretty straight-forward. At the top, there is, of course, the name of the festival; this header is the biggest font of all the writing. Then, also at the top, there is usually the dates of the event, as well as the date tickets go on sale. In the instance of the Shaky Knees flyer, the specific location is also listed. Next is the bulk of the flyer: the artist. There always seems to be a pattern in the manner in which the artists are listed for these events. The headliners are obviously at the top (lining the head, so to say (I'm not clever)), and in the instance of the Shaky Knees flyer, the headliners are also in a bigger font. Bonnaroo's flyer keeps the font the same size for all the artist, but still list the more well-known one's at the top. This is intentional, of course, for the more well-known artists grab peoples attention. If Shaky Knees were to list "Black Pistol Fire", "Matthew E. White", and "Field Report" at the top and in bigger font, but listed "The Strokes", "The Avett Brothers", and "The Pixies" at the bottom and in smaller font, it is likely not as many people would attend. Like with most texts, it is important to grab the audiences attention as soon as you can in order to keep them interested. It is like this for books, magazines, newspapers, etc. etc. And it is also like this for music festival flyers.
Also, to anyone that sees this, I highly recommend you look at the Shaky Knees lineup. It's beautiful. As beautiful as Julian Casablancas (ladies).

ReplyDeleteTatyana's project is a print project when she finally posts up the art in the street, but it goes through many layers of multimodality before it gets pasted. She is speaking to women, taking their photos, converting them to illustrations, and then turning them into large works of art including visual and textual media. The genre is street art and this genre is traditionally rebellious. The advantages of the genre are you do not need a curator, and your work will reach a potentially infinite number of people who will pass it on the street. This passerby effect is addressed by Tatyana in how she puts the portraits of women up on the exact streets they were harassed on. The messages are usually brief, being 2 short sentences or less. This brevity comes from the instantaneous nature of street art and how people process it as they see it.
The printed text I chose was a flyer for an upcoming music festival. Like any other flyer, it provides a list of performers, dates of the festival, and the date tickets will be going on sale. It does not categorize the artists by genre but rather lists them I order of popularity or success. The color of the text of the artists names appears in white with a black background. What makes the flyer stand out is the boarder that surrounds the names of the performers. The boarder is not a basic one with lines surrounding the artist’s names but instead it contains cartoon like images of what can be expected at the festival. It shows a hotdog smothered in ketchup, a pair a headphones, stars and flowers all over the sides boarders. It also display two pairs of smiling lips, a bold text that reads “silent disco”, and at the lower part depicts an aquatic theme. Lastly, there is a hashtag that promotes the festival and allows festival goers to connect with one another via social media.
ReplyDeleteThe colors, shapes and location of the images grab the attention of the viewer more than the text itself. The flyer does a good job at showing that just like there are many artist preforming different genres, there will be multiple activities for people with all sorts of different interests.
For my text I chose this flyer for the FSU Pride Student Union event, XOXO QTs. Its purpose is to convince an audience to attend an event involving a popular holiday, during which people belonging to certain groups are often discriminated against. This event is presented as a safe space for people of all orientations and genders to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteThe flyer is laid out fairly simply in order to emphasize the most important content: a viewer’s eye is first drawn to the candy hearts, signifying Valentine’s Day, then the words Pride Student Union in dark, bold font, contrasting with the pastel candies. With just a quick glance the viewer can see what the flyer is for, and upon further examination you can see clear schedule information and multiple ways to get in touch with the organization, as well as the important details about who this event is aimed towards. By keeping the flyer largely uncluttered apart from the eye-catching header, the authors of the text presented all the relevant information in a clear and prioritized way, making it easy for the viewer to take in all the details in minimal time and with little effort.

The print text that I have chosen is a pocket guide to embroidery. It is a laminated accordion fold instruction manual on different stitch types for hand embroidery. While I think it's a little less obvious than the more radical/social change that political and cultural(?) print texts might bring about, it is encouraging the reader/viewer to change the way they embroider to either improve their technique or expand it.
ReplyDeleteThe first page of the flyer is primarily linguistic and explains different techniques, floss and fabric types, how to begin and end stitches, and how to understand the rest of the manual. This text fits the genre conventions of instruction manuals very well in that after a brief introduction, it is primarily visual and features increasingly more complex methods. The instructions are meant to be approached by desired category first, and then in a linear manner after that. The color pallet is limited which makes it clear and easy to understand, and the visual mode dominates the layout. Overall, this text is exactly what one could expect from an instruction manual based on the already established conventions of that genre.
The print text I chose was an advertisement. I believe that with advertisements there are subgenres. Our society is overrun with advertisements of all kinds. Advertisements share some similar genres to books. The advertisement I chose is a humorous advertisement. As is expected with advertisements, it is short and to the point. Advertisements also are typically flashy and get your attention, because without your attention they are ineffective.
ReplyDeleteThe advertisement I chose was a chick fil a advertisement. Following the guidelines of the genre of advertisement, it is very short. The advertisement only has six words on it reading, “u wanna peece of me? Chick fil a”. The advertisement plays into the genre of humor by containing the chick fil a cow dressed up as a chicken encouraging the consumption of chicken as opposed to beef. The spelling is also wrong because it is supposed to look as if the cow itself wrote the advertisement. The words on the advertisement are big and flashy to grab the attention of the viewer, then the misspelling grabs the curiosity of the viewer, leading them to look at it until they understand the humor. I suppose chick fil a believes that after thinking this much about one sign you must be hungry enough to want their product.
http://dior.tumblr.com/post/110259113724
ReplyDeleteI chose an advertisement from Dior’s tumblr page that I have also seen in magazines. The advertisement is for Dior’s perfume, Miss Dior. It is a very minimalist ad. It features Natalie Portman (a noticeable actress), an image of the perfume bottle, the Dior symbol, and lofty script indicating the name of the perfume. This advertisement is simplistic merely because Dior is a well-known, high-end brand, and there is no need to explain what the product is they are advertising. When lesser known companies take a similar minimalist approach, they’re ads often fail because the consumer is left wondering what the company is, what is so special about the product, what is the function of the product? I feel like the FitBit was one of those confusing advertisements. Everyone had one but you didn’t really know what it did until someone who had a FitBit explained it to you.
Much like the notion that you are at the pinnacle of success when you no longer have to introduce yourself, Dior does not need to waste effort with explanations. You know by the poise and effortlessness of the advertisement that the perfume is going to be a lighter scent, traditionally feminine, and most importantly, good enough for a celebrity to don. The genre of perfume ads is inherently similar. The images they exhibit are representative of the person who would wear that type of perfume. If you don’t feel like your personality fits the woman or man presented in the ad then you can assume you will not like that perfume. The perfume ad genre isn’t restrictive but I believe the more well known the brand is, the less likely that brand is to break tradition. Which obviously has its consequences because people are more likely to ignore their ads and not notice the difference between the products they are advertising because most Dior ads look the same.
In the case of a film series with which audiences are already familiar, the creators of the poster will often try to minimize the amount of information presented as much as possible. The viewer is shown only a character from the story or a logo, which they will immediately recognize. There are a few different reasons this convention might be used. First of all, it makes it easier for the poster to catch the viewer's eye and draw their notice, but it also causes them to feel in-the-know and creates a sense of enjoyment at having their familiarity with that franchise acknowledged. Another reason would be the sense of anticipation the poster creates; it causes the viewer to begin thinking about the film and what might happen in it, fixing it in their mind. Yet another would be simply the visual appeal of having a minimalist poster.
ReplyDeleteThe poster for the upcoming fourth installment in the Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World, displays this convention. The poster, only a slightly altered version of the original Jurassic Park poster, contains the Jurassic Park logo - this time in grey, instead of red and yellow - with the addition of white mist in the background which was previously solid black. The major difference here is that the word "world" now takes the place of "park," much like in the story, which appears to be a direct retread of the first film's with the theme park now called "Jurassic World" instead of "Jurassic Park." The sameness of the story is part of the reason the creators of this poster have attempted to use the appeal of familiarity. However, the poster has also been shaped by genre conventions.
